STOKR operates on a non-custodial model. This guide explains what that means for how your digital securities are held, who is responsible for your private keys, and how hardware wallets fit into this model.
Where your digital securities are held
Digital securities are issued directly to the Liquid Network-compatible wallet you register during onboarding, either SideSwap or Blockstream app. You can create multiple addresses within either wallet and link them to your STOKR account for asset management purposes.
Who controls your private keys
You are solely responsible for your private keys. Neither STOKR nor the issuer issuing a digital security ever has access to, or stores, your private keys. Issuers retain only your public wallet address and your KYC information, held for regulatory compliance purposes.
Because STOKR does not custody your private keys, you have full control of your digital securities and cryptocurrency at all times. This also means you carry full responsibility for keeping them secure. Never share your private keys or wallet seed phrase with anyone, including STOKR staff.
Using a hardware wallet
Hardware wallets add a layer of physical security by keeping your private keys on a dedicated device, offline. STOKR supports the following hardware wallet setup today:
- Ledger hardware wallets can be paired with Blockstream app for enhanced security.
Hardware wallet pairing with SideSwap is not yet available. This integration is on the roadmap but has not been released.
What this means in practice
Because STOKR cannot access or reset your private keys, losing your wallet access without a backup is a serious event. Keep a secure backup of your wallet's seed phrase in a safe location. If you do lose access, a formal recovery process exists – see "Troubleshooting missing digital securities and recovering wallet access" for the steps, timing, and fee involved.
