How identity verification (KYC) works on STOKR

  • Updated

STOKR is a registered Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) and Payment Institution (PI) with the Luxembourg CSSF. As a registered CASP and Payment Institution, STOKR is required to verify the identity of every investor before they can invest, in line with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and financial crime regulations. This guide explains why identity verification is mandatory, how the process works, typical timing, what it means to be "whitelisted," and what to do if your application is rejected.

Why identity verification is mandatory

KYC/AML verification is a legal requirement, not an optional step. Issuers issuing digital securities on STOKR must know the identity of their investors, and investors must complete verification before they can invest in any offering on the platform. STOKR performs this verification directly, using Sumsub, a specialist identity verification provider, to run the underlying checks.

How the process works

  1. During registration, you complete an identity verification flow powered by Sumsub. This typically includes submitting identity documents and a face verification step.
  2. Once submitted, STOKR's compliance team reviews your application.
  3. If Euro payments are involved, an additional verification step is run by STOKR's payment provider.

How long verification takes

Compliance review after your Sumsub submission typically takes 1 to 3 business days. If Euro payments apply, the payment provider's verification step typically takes up to 48 hours. If you have not heard back within these timeframes, submit a request.

What "whitelisted" means

A whitelisted investor is one who has completed registration, been fully verified through KYC with an accepted outcome, and linked a digital wallet to their STOKR account. Only whitelisted investors can invest in offerings hosted on STOKR. On-chain, whitelisting is enforced by the Liquid Network's transfer restriction capabilities.

If your application is rejected

A rejected KYC application is not final without explanation. STOKR's compliance team will follow up by email with the reason. Common causes include identity documents that are unclear or difficult to read, and face verification images where the face is not properly centred or clearly visible.
